Linear video edit - this piece is totally different from what was presented at Electrópolis

My brother Diego was murdered on August 24th, 2008 in Bogotá, Colombia. In 2011, I was invited to participate in Electrópolis, an architectural video projection festival, happening just a few feet away from where he was murdered. This is the linear video I created after the event, using audio and video clips captured with my cell phone camera of the last times I saw my brother alive, as well as images of his funeral, burial and trial of his murderer. The soundtrack was composed mixing the audio from the clips used in this piece and a radio news clip related to Diego's murder and the judicial process. The clips where he is alive were captured on New Year's eve of 2007 - where we danced, drank champagne and celebrated like every other Colombian family - and July 2008, when he visited for the last time our mother in Florida with his one year old old son. The rest of the clips were captured on the day of his funeral, during his wake, the religious ceremony and the burial, including a poignant video where I capture myself carrying his casket. There is one short clip that shows his murderer, during the trial in February of 2009, as well as his son's second birthday. The excerpt from the radio is the conversation between the presenters of a popular morning show where one of them asks the other if he remembers the murder of "Professor Echeverry" at Lourdes Square. The journalist cannot remember the event, and all his colleagues give him clues related to this very publicized tragedy in Bogotá, involving the "theft of the car", the "stray bullet" and the Universidad de Los Andes - where my brother used to teach, until he finally remembers. This piece is a standalone experimental video work, inspired by my interactive video projects WORLD and LIFE. There are a total of 57 audio and video clips that were initially rendered in a random manner using a video algorithm in Flash to create each one of the twelve 360x240px visual quadrants, then edited on the HD grid using After Effects, contrasting the low resolution of my phone camera with the large display.

Public art display of my project DIEGO, an homage to my brother who was murdered just a few feet of where this work was presented in August of 2008. Curated by Carmen Gil Vroljik for Electrópolis 2011 in Bogotá, premiered September 30, 2011. Sponsored by the Universidad de los Andes and Intel®. Please read this text
